Universum Digitalis developed a mobile application for the FotoMuseum of Antwerp. The application is available for iPhone and iPod Touch. Visitors of the museum can hire a hand-out device. The application contains information about photos, photographers and cameras. The app can be synced with a server so it can be easily updated with new content. New features, including audio support and multiple languages will be added in the near future.
Tour & Taxis Audio Tour
The Tour & Taxis Audio Tour immerses visitors in a unique multimedia experience. The combination of narration and photographs, as well as an interactive itinerary, allow sightseers to discover this nineteenth century industrial site. The Tour & Taxis chronicle is told by those who have assured its continuity during an entire century. The audio tour is offered for free, online and onsite. Technically, the audio-tour adopts an N-TIER architecture that guarantees the separation of content and its representation. This allows presenting the same content in a variety of ways. At present, the audio tour has three applications available that vary in functionality and user experience. Visitors who possess an iPhone or iPod Touch can download the application via Apple's AppStore. On first launch, the language of the audio tour has to be selected. Choices are English, French, and Dutch or multilingual. Next the application connects to the Tour & Taxis Audio Tour Server, and downloads/synchronizes the selected tour content. Hereafter, the visitors can explore the audio tour without the necessity of a network connection. At the reception desk of Tour & Taxis, visitors can rent an iPod Touch. Visitors with a traditional iPod or MP3 player can download the audio tour as a podcast from iTunes. The online web-viewer provides an alternative for those who prefer exploring the site from the lounge whilst enjoying a refreshing beverage.
Het Grote Ongeduld
"Het Grote Ongeduld!" is a short film festival dedicated to the graduation projects of all Belgian film schools. The festival provides an opportunity for the participating graduates to present their first production to a professional audience. Universum Digitalis built a toolset for structuring the films and their metadata, which includes an API that ensures easy distribution of this information. On top of this toolset two online client applications exist. Via a web plug-in an overview of the awarded films, their detailed information and a mechanism for playing the film, can be integrated in an existing web-site. The second application is a dedicated mobile application for iPhone and iPad that has similar functionality as the web plug-in. However, the interface is optimized for a mobile phone's small screen. Additionally, the mobile application allows users to save the contact information of the students and schools immediately to their contacts.
The VUB Art Collection
"The VUB Art Collection - On Display and in Your Hand" is organized in context of the iBrussels initiative as a demonstrator for enriching visits to art musea. Artworks that decorate offices at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel were shown to the public during the exhibition. For each artwork and artist, related multimedia in form of text, audio and video, enables the visitor to gain a broader appreciation. Universum Digitalis’ Multimedia Platform for Museums was used for structuring, managing and distributing the vast amount of information. Visitors could access the extra information without having to follow a predefined sequence. Moreover, they could choose a set of multiple languages in which information may be provided to them. At the exposition, visitors could take a picture of a painting to access information about the work and its artist. The mobile application for the demonstrator is an iPhone application that is available via Apple's AppStore. Thus, even now, months after the exhibition, the VUB art collection can still be appreciated.
